JOPLIN, Mo. - Operation Fairy Godmother is underway and looking for those willing to donate their time or items. The program has been around for 13 years and aims to help juniors and seniors get ready for prom in an affordable way.
"Not everybody can afford the attire that it costs for prom. So, Operation Fairy Godmother collects used or slightly worn prom dresses, and tuxedos and other attire needed for prom," said Debby Letherman, Operation Fairy Godmother founder. The group is also looking for items such as jewelry, unused makeup, hair accessories, even shopping bags. Local students are getting involved and working to help their fellow classmates. Not only is senior, Annie Strickling, a returning volunteer, but she's been a shopper in the past as well. "As a shopper, it's a lot of fun because there's always a lot of people that want to help you. And you start to feel really good about yourself, because when you try the dresses on people always say how pretty you look," said Annie Strickling, Operation Fairy Godmother volunteer. Operation Fairy Godmother will be hosting an event this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the old Duenweg Elementary School, located at 202 Malloy Circle. Student volunteers are hoping to get some help. "Donate your time and whatever you have in that, just because, you know, you might not need anything, it doesn't mean you're not helping someone else. In that, when you give your time it's going to make you feel better, it's going to make the whole prom season even happier for you," said Katy Pena, Operation Fairy Godmother volunteer. "I would just ask them to help, to help make people feel assured and to help someone have a great prom," said Strickling.
